Puppy Training Tips

Spend Time on the Floor with the Puppy
Developing a solid relationship with your puppy helps them want to please you and pick up on behaviors a lot easier. This entails being present in their early lives as much as possible and showing them qualities you intend for them to mirror. They’re excellent small mimics; the more relaxed you present yourself, the easier to tell them how to behave. It also encourages them to trust you.
Respect Each Other’s Boundaries
Since dogs cannot use their voice, you must be extra observant of their body language. Learning to interpret their actions can prevent undesirable behavior like growling or biting. 9/10 dog bites happen because their boundaries have continually been crossed, and they feel they don’t have a choice or way out. Allowing them time to form a strong bond with you and your family members will help establish those boundaries which benefit everyone.
Protect Your Dog from Viruses
Vets will say to keep them home until they’re fully vaccinated, but behavior-wise, you have until about 16 weeks to expose them to different things since they’re bursting with curiosity. After that time frame, they’ll hit a stranger-danger-style stage, which can cause them a lot of fear. For the dogs we train, we take them out to places that don’t have many other dogs around. We put them in a stroller so they’re off the ground; some viruses are airborne, and some are only caught through contact. The stroller helps us control what they sniff or lick. Moreover, taking them to places where there are not a lot of dogs is also generally safer. If you take them to places you plan on frequenting together before the 16 weeks, they get used to exploration, and the fear never develops.
Ensure Your Puppy and the Dogs Around Them are Vaccinated
Many infections in dog parks can get to your puppy before they’re adequately protected. Some viruses can live on the ground for over a year. On the other hand, although exposure to noise and public places can be helpful in a dog's early stages, keeping them away from close contact as much as possible is still advisable.
